If you find yourself spending the weekend with a stranger to pay off your fiance’s gambling debt, you could do a lot worse than this Kilauea, HI, retreat.
The home served as the island getaway of gambling guru Tommy Korman (played by James Caan) in the movie “Honeymoon in Vegas.” You can retrace the “romantic” steps of Caan and an adorable Sarah Jessica Parker in this beachfront house on the lush island of Kauai.
And really, what’s not to like: The six-bedroom beachfront estate boasts ocean views, snorkeling out the backdoor, and proximity to the largest continuous coral reef in the islands, according to the listing.
One drawback may be the price: a whopping $8,600,000, which may explain why the listing has languished for a few years.
Granted, the cost to live in paradise isn’t cheap, but it’s become cheaper: The listing originally asked for $12,900,000 in October 2012. It was relisted in December 2013 for $9,500,000. And a year later, the number dropped again, to its current list price.
You certainly get a slice of the good Hawaii life with this purchase. The 4,000-square-foot home, designed by local luminary Norman Lacayo, features plenty of high-end details, including floor-to-ceiling windows, a master bedroom in marble with a Jacuzzi tub and private deck, and a guesthouse. Also, a lush tropical landscape surrounds the building.
And we mentioned the beach, right?
By the way, movies aren’t this house’s only claim to fame: It was owned by legendary R.E.M. rocker Peter Buck and could be rented for $7,000 a week.
Buck clearly had a soft spot for the tropical gem. He told the Wall Street Journal that the Garden Island is the “one I love.”
When asked about the most romantic place he’d been, the musician answered, “This place I go to in Kauai. For me it’s all about loved ones and family, so I don’t really care where I am, but I brought my kids up here.”
If buying the house is a little out of reach, you could always check it out on a guided tour. Not surprisingly, the property has become a tourist attraction thanks to its movie connection. But it’s not alone on an island: The picturesque Garden Isle has served as a backdrop for multiple Hollywood flicks, from “Jurassic Park” to “The Descendants.”
